GPS Vehicle Tracking Systems-Why Companies Use Them

GPS vehicle tracking systems have a variety of different uses for many different companies. Over recent times the set up costs associated with installing these systems has reduced meaning they are now far more affordable for even the smaller sized companies.

When you combine a GPS receiver with a cellular telephone modem and some specialist software, you end up with a powerful tool known as a GPS vehicle tracking device. If you then connect this device via the cellular network it will allow you to track as many company vehicles as you choose, and you can track them in real time.

A few years ago the cost of doing this limited the number of companies who could afford to use these systems; when the price was much higher, it could take many years before your company benefited from the financial savings these systems could produce.

There are many different reasons businesses nowadays choose to fit GPS vehicle trackers, but there seems to be an acceptance of the main areas where GPS trackers benefit businesses:

1. Customer service improvements - GPS tracking systems have enabled many companies to improve the field based services they offer their customers. Knowing the exact location of all their support engineers has allowed more accurate estimation of when support engineers will arrive and means emergencies can be dealt with much quicker as it is possible to divert the closest support engineer when necessary.

2. Increased productivity - You might be shocked at the length of time individual employees are taking for lunch, how many employees go shopping in works time or how many times a company vehicle is used driven for personal use. When you fit GPS tracking systems to your fleet you will know exactly where every vehicle is at all times, and exactly how long they take to travel between customer's locations and how long they are there for.

3. Optimum vehicle usage - Do you know what percentage of time your company's vehicles are in use? If not, you are not alone. With trackers you can produce reports of how many vehicles are not being utilized fully, enabling you to downsize the fleet if necessary, and also look at how many unnecessary journeys are made using company vehicles over a particular time period.

4. Reduce your insurance costs - insurance companies love fleets with GPS trackers, if a vehicle is ever stolen there is a much increased chance of getting the vehicle, and any cargo, back undamaged if the vehicle has a tracker fitted. A GPS vehicle tracking system will also allow you to monitor your employees driving habits which will show you who the regular speeders are and who your safest drivers are. This information will help significantly when renegotiating your insurance renewal.

There is some downside though, as not everyone will be please if you choose to get a GPS vehicle tracking systems fitted to your fleet. Experience tells us that employees are likely to feel like the company is spying on then, and to a degree they are right. You might lose some people, but you might also find that these are the same people who are most abusing the system at the moment. Depending on what system you choose to install, you can expect it to take 6 to 12 months for a system to pay for itself in increased productivity and reduced costs.
