Potty Training Puppies With Methods That Work Now

To feel like it is hopeless is normal when potty training puppies. The two P's - patience and persistence is what it takes for it to work. From the beginning you must show your puppy that you are in charge. It is natural for dogs to travel in packs and having a pack leader. Your puppy will get the upper hand when it comes to housebreaking a puppy if you don't put your foot down. Don't let this happen.

Basically, what you want your puppy to learn is that he has a certain place to go and to only go in that certain place. Your puppy will eventually go potty because it makes you happy when you send clear and precise signals.

Choose who will be taking part when housebreaking a puppy. It is important that everyone is on the same page and will have to know how the method of potty training puppies actually work. In order to train successfully, you must train repetitively and stay consistent. 8 to 12 weeks old is the perfect age to start potty training puppies.

When housebreaking a puppy the next thing you will need to do is come up with a schedule. A puppy will need to go out every hour or two and when he first wakes up in the mornings, after meals, after playtime, after naps, and before going to bed. You will want to write down a schedule of your puppy's trips made outside, playtime, and his feedings. You will need to have the mechanics of your routine in place. Decide where your puppy will potty in your yard and which door you will be taking him out of.

You will need to put a leash and collar on your puppy. The biggest mistake that puppy owners make is letting their puppy run freely through the house when potty training puppies. You never want to loose sight of your puppy. To keep your puppy in you sight you can put your puppy on a leash and hook it to your belt or belt loop. You will want your puppy in his crate if you can't keep an eye on him. When housebreaking a puppy, the key is to always take him outside on a leash to go potty. This will train your puppy that it is not playtime but potty time.

For this to be successful, everyone that is helping will have to be on the same page or your puppy will get very confused. Give a short verbal command to your puppy such as "time to potty" when you reach the potty spot. Give your puppy a lot of praise when she starts to potty and keep praising her until she is finished. When housebreaking a puppy she will soon learn what it is that you want if you use the same verbal command every time. After your puppy has eliminated on the right spot another thing you can do is give her a treat.

It is critical when housebreaking a puppy that you have a schedule of feeding time. A puppy will eat three to four times a day. A huge mistake that most puppy owners make is leaving food out for their puppy all day. Leave fresh water out for you puppy all day ...just take it up two hours before bed time. When your puppy has ate... take her food bowl up and wait about 15 minutes after she has finished eating then put her leash on and walk her out the designated door to her potty spot.

Be sure everybody sticks to the same training methods when potty training puppies. Consistency will be the key to your success. It will only confuse the puppy if you don't. You will find that it is not that difficult when housebreaking a puppy if you follow these methods.
