Registry Clean Up-Do Registry Cleaners Really Work?

As a computer professional, one of the most common questions I get asked is about registry clean up, and more specifically--"Do registry cleaners work?" People really want to know that if they spend money on a registry cleaner, it will truly do what it says it will - and the answer is yes, it will, provided you know what to look for when doing your research.

All registry cleaners offer the basics--the obvious detection of registry errors, the fixing of those errors, and backup and restore capability. Most also offer a deep scan and will create a log for every action performed, which are two features you definitely want to make sure the cleaner you choose does have the ability to perform. It is the advanced features, however, that truly make the difference between just an average registry cleaner and one that will speed up your computer significantly.

Registry Compacting and Optimization

This is arguably the most important feature that sets apart the top of the line registry cleaners from the ho-hum basic ones.

Over time, your computer's registry becomes fragmented much in the same manner as your hard drive does. Now if you have ever run a disk defragmentation (which should be performed at the very least monthly), then you know how much faster your computer can run when that process is finished.

Well the same thing happens when a registry cleaner performs a compacting and optimization of your registry. While most cleaners simply perform a basic registry clean up, you may not notice a significant performance increase because of the fragmentation that still exists within all of your registry entries. In other words, it will still take your operating system and programs a significant amount of time to find what they need if they must look in several places and piece those entries together.

A compacting and optimization of your registry basically examines all the entries and reorganizes them in a manner that allows your operating system and applications to find what they need in a much more efficient manner because they don't need to look in several places, as everything they need can be found rather quickly.

This reorganization results in a significant performance increase not only in the time it takes your computer to boot but also in the time it takes to perform tasks and run applications.

Registry Monitoring Feature

One other important feature that you should look for when comparing different registry cleaners is whether or not the cleaner actively monitors your registry for potential corruption and errors.

This works much like a real time protection agent in your antivirus or anti spyware software, whereas the software actively monitors for potential threats, in this case your registry cleaner software will continually monitor your registry for problems.

Over the long term, proactive monitoring can save you a lot of headaches as potential errors and registry corruption can be prevented long before they have a significant impact on your computer's performance.

In a nutshell, if you are looking to perform registry clean up on your system you can be assured that registry cleaners do work. However, you need to also be aware that because of the more advanced features that are available, some registry cleaners work far better than others.
