It's difficult to think that your system really needs it when cholesterol has so much bad press. There are two sorts of cholesterol in your system, bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol and good cholesterol also known as HDL cholesterol. In your body, cholesterol is needed to make hormones, vitamin D and bile salts.

On the other hand, the bad cholesterol could cause you many inconveniences. The main concern with LDL cholesterol is that it will put cholesterol onto artery walls that will make plaque. The plaque in turn will narrow and block the arteries. This could be the cause of blood flow to be blocked, which is bad news for your heart.

There are a lot of confusing terms being said when it comes to cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol is one of those terms. You could believe that all dietary cholesterol is bad, but in fact dietary cholesterol doesn't raise blood cholesterol as high as you may believe. The two bad guys here are saturated fats and trans fatty acids.

So what you need to do when you think of cholesterol problems is to decrease your levels of bad cholesterol. The best way to do this is through dietary changes. In addition to cutting down on foods with bad cholesterol such as meat, eggs, dairy and seafood, you could also eat different foods that will decrease LDL levels.

Trans fatty acids are found in a lot of packaged food. Microwave popcorn, hard stick margarine and several French fries from some fast food chains are all responsible. You can lower down your absorption of trans fatty acids that will all create bad cholesterol in your system, by eliminating these foods or trying to find better substitutes.

You may raise the quantity of good cholesterol in your system while decreasing the bad cholesterol. The reason for this is that the existing of good cholesterol in your body means that excess cholesterol will be taken back to the liver so it can be expunged out of your system. This denotes you need a lot of good cholesterol as high levels of good cholesterol can reduce risk of heart disease.

Lifestyle changes such as eating foods that have soluble fiber and monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats will contribute to increase good cholesterol levels. You can also increase the period of physical activity in your daily life to decrease cholesterol levels. Another good idea is to limit alcohol intake to one glass per day for women and two a day for men.
