Football: Tailgate Parties

Many often wonder if the act of tailgating is as old as the sport of football itself. Tailgate parties are often characterized by a group of like-minded individuals who share similar interest in a certain team and arrive early to games for their own version of a pre-game pep rallycomplete with an array of food and beverages. Often under a tent or out of the back of a large car or truck, tailgate parties may occur anywhere in the vicinity of the game--a parking lot, a field or even on the side of the road.

A common misconception is that one must be invited beforehand to attend a tailgate party. In most cases, if you walk up to a party and are wearing common team colors and also share a spirited affection for a team, you are likely to be asked to join the party, right on the spot. Tailgate atmospheres are considered to be very open and communal atmospheres where everyone is excited about the game which is about to begin and enjoys the camaraderie of fellow fans.

Tailgate parties can start at anytime before the gameand can last during and even after the game is over. Many times if a fan is unable to get tickets to enter the stadium, tailgating outside while listening to the game on a radio is the best alternative. Once in awhile tailgating outside a venue may be allowed only with a proper permit. For important and high-stakes games, such as the Super Bowl, tailgaters may start their party a full 24 hours before the game, and keep it going for many hours, maybe even days after.

There is no one recipe for the perfect tailgating experience. There are a variety of foods which are deemed appropriate, such as chips and dips, cocktail wieners, wings, hamburgers and hot dogs. Some seasoned tailgaters may bring their own grill and barbecue pit and cook more elaborate feasts such as ribs, steaks or even vegetable kabobs. Alcoholic beverages are not necessarily required, but 99% of the population would likely agree that a large cooler full of beer is a crucial element of any tailgating experience.

If you are have an affinity or attachment to a specific football team and/or you enjoy drinks, food and friends crowded around your car, then you are the ideal party planner. Proper advance planning is highly advised as many extras maybe be needed at your party that you likely have not yet thought of. These items include: trash bags, paper towels, paper plates, ice, bug spray, sunscreen and jumper cables (in case you drain your car battery while listening to the radio). Pre-planning aside, the most important rule is to have fun and cheer your team on to victory!
