Corn Resources And Its Uses In Iowa

Many people may not realize that Iowa leads the nation in corn production. Yet, not only does it lead the nation in corn production, it alone produces more corn than whole countries.

For example, Iowa produces three times as much corn as Argentina. Only so much can go toward actually being corn on the cob or corn in a can though.

So it's no wonder that Iowa has gotten a little creative when it comes to corn uses. This resource can be used for many different things including to use as fuel, to make cornstarch and of course, to make corn mazes. Who would have thought corn's uses could be so diverse?

Some of Iowa's corn is turned into ethanol. Ethanol is a clean burning fuel that can be used for transportation. Ethanol helps keep the air cleaner and reduces the United States' dependence upon foreign oil. Even mixed with gasoline, this resource is helpful, making gasoline burn cleaner.

Nearly 30% of Iowa's corn goes toward making ethanol. Making corn into ethanol produces more energy than it takes to make the ethanol. Yet, that's not even the best part about this resource. Cars can get better gas mileage using ethanol than using regular unleaded gasoline. Plus, IndyCar drivers use 100% ethanol in their cars. If it's good enough for them, it's got to be good enough for all of us.

When Iowa's corn is made into cornstarch, it has many uses that people might not know were even possible for a resource like this. Yes, of course, it can be used by people in cooking, but without corn to make cornstarch, there are parts of our lives that might be at least a little bit harder.

For example, your frozen pizza would be really soggy before you were even able to eat it. The moisture in the sauce would get into the crust and make it soggy. A modified cornstarch that is added to the crust helps to keep it crisp. Putting up wallpaper would be frustrating without the cornstarch in the wallpaper paste.

This resource helps to slow down the adhesive process making it possible to adjust each strip accurately. Even childhood would not have been the same for many people without cornstarch. It is used in chalk (including sidewalk chalk) and in crayons to help to hold these products together.

For many people, as late summer and early fall arrive, it's time go and visit a corn maze. Without the corn being planted in the first place, this resource would not be available for people to enjoy.

For many people, October without a corn maze would almost be a tragedy. There wouldn't be the experience of getting lost in a corn maze and running into dead end after dead end only to find that you were almost at the exit half an hour ago. There is a lot we owe to Iowa and other places for providing us with corn. Without this resource, life really would be a lot different.
