Encouraging The Advancement Of Technological Applications In Louisiana

During the eighties up to the mid-nineties, many US states began to realize the importance of supporting technological developments to push for economic developments in the states. This is why many technology councils and organizations were established during these two decades. It was the same for the state of Louisiana. In the early nineties, the founders of the Louisiana Technology Council thought about the benefits of establishing a council that will encourage technological developments within the state so that the economy will remain competitive even in the twenty-first century.

The Louisiana Technology Council (LTC) was first established as the New Orleans Technology Council (NOTC) in early 1994. The City of New Orleans, the University of New Orleans and several organizations founded the NOTC. During its initial year, the Louisiana Technology Council received funding from the City of New Orleans. But beginning the council's second year, funding has come from the organization's membership fees, events and other income-generating activities.

The organization, with its mission to encourage technological developments within the state of Louisiana has several initiatives to fulfill its missions. Some of the initiatives of the council include the eWards, the creation of special interest groups, and events. The council also continues to foster partnerships between the private and the public sectors of the state of Louisiana. The council continues to work with the Department of Economic Development, the universities in the state as well as the Greater New Orleans Inc.

The LTC has a business recovery center which now serves as a temporary office space for businesses from New Orleans that were badly hit by the hurricane Katrina. The center is meant to be an incubation center for start-up companies. Currently, companies that are operating from the center pay a small fee for the office space and the other services that the center provides them. The business recovery center is a great help to the businesses that were badly hit by the natural calamity. If the recovery center did not exist some of the businesses would have had to completely stop their operations. The business recovery center can afford to charge minimal fees to its tenants because it receives support from private organizations. After Hurricane Katrina, the business recovery center received donations from Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Cox Business Services, and the Waldemar S. Nelson Company.

The LTC also hosts the eWards which presents awards for the following categories: Outstanding Leadership in Technology, Technology Educator of the Year, Growth Company of the Year, New Technology Product of the Year, "Cool Tech" Award, and Best Application of Technology. By giving out these awards, the council hopes to attract more technology-focused companies to join the council.

The council also aims to become one of the most widely-respected technology associations in America. By working hard in providing the needs of its members and by initiating programs and events to encourage innovation, the council hopes to make Louisiana an attractive place for technology-focused businesses. Ultimately the goal is to make positive contributions to the economy of the state of Louisiana.
