The official openoffice.org Suite description. "OpenOffice.org is a fully-featured open-source office productivity suite available as a free download for major platforms in over 45 supported languages. It is compatible with competing office suites. OpenOffice.org is developed, supported, and promoted by an international community operating from the http://www.openoffice.org/ website.
Description for the rest of us. OpenOffice.org Suite is a FREE office suite that can create, edit and save many document formats including Microsoft Office. Export your documents as Adobe pdf in one step. Downloads available in more than 45 languages and adding more as they become availible. Openoffice runs on ALL popular operating systems.
Editor Comments: OpenOffice is not fly-by-night software. Many governments, academic institutions and businesses have adopted OpenOffice as their primary document editor. Sun Microsystems announced in November of 2006 that 100 million copies of OpenOffice 2.0 had been distributed officially. Unofficially--the estimate of copies distributed by OpenOffice contributors is many times that count.
This suite is amazing, it is compatible with all other office document types. I have Microsoft Office 2003 and I don't use it since I downloaded OpenOffice.org Suite.
As an example, Openoffice Writer will open these file formats:
*.txt *.doc *.rtf *.sdw *.odt *.html *.css *.xml *.eml and almost any other known or unknown text format.
Openoffice Writer will save in these file formats:
Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) Microsoft Word 95 (.doc) Microsoft Word 6.0 (.doc) Rich Text Format (.rtf) Star Writer 3.0/4.0/50 (.sdw) Text or encoded Text (.txt) html (.html) DocBook (.xml) Microsoft Word 2003 xml (.xml) and of course, OpenDocument Text (.odt).
Not to mention that almost any document can be exported as Adobe .PDF and more extentions are added with each new reliease.
Applications Included:
The suite contains a text editor (Writer), spreadsheet editor (Calc), a presentation creator (Impress), a Math function creator (Math) and a very easy to use data base application (Base). OpenOffice has all of the features of Microsoft Office and is easier to use. I really can't say enough good things about this suite.
